Monday 28th November 2011 – Friday 2nd December 2011

This week in Literacy, we started looking at traditional stories. We found out that traditional stories are stories that have been around for a long time, and first began by being told lots and lots of times rather than being written down.  We read the story of “The Little Red Hen” and “The Enormous Turnip” We talked about the fact that both stories were based on farm animals or animals that we’d find in the countryside. We discovered that this was because when the stories were first told, the storyteller would base the characters on familiar animals and in familiar settings. We also recognised that both stories had repeating parts to them.  We sequenced pictures from the stories and made lists of the different characters in both stories, using adjectives to describe them.

In Numeracy, we have been counting in tens. We have also begun to think about how we can find half of different shapes and half of different amounts of numbers. We are going to move onto doubling numbers and talk about any patterns that we notice.

The rest of our time has been spent rehearsing for our Christmas production. We have been working really hard learning the words to the songs and some of us had lines to take home and learn. We are really looking forward to performing to the rest of the school and to our families.

We ended our week with our usual Special Mentions assembly. We had three Special Mentions this week. One was for Autumn, who remembered to leave finger spaces between each word as she wrote different sentences, and Dominic and Ella Q both received one for all round improvement in Literacy, including reading, writing and spellings.
