SCIENCE CHOSEN BY JORDAN

MONDAY
Today in class we worked in two groups to create a wind pulley. The materials we needed were one large empty cotton reel, a small cotton reel, pencil, cardboard, cocktail sticks, cork, blue tack (for the weight), masking tape and some Dulpo bricks for it to stand on. The children followed the instructions from the teacher and worked as a team to build their pulley. Each child got to test out their pulley by blowing the sails to see how fast they could lower the weight. We then used an electric fan to see if it worked any quicker, the fan was the winner.
Awaiting photos of the pulley's.

TUESDAY
The great boat race was today's task.
They were given lots of different materials, they had to work in pairs to make a boat. They had to think about the materials they were using, would it float, would it be too heavy, was it water resistant etc. We had lots of races, the winning boat was made by Ben and Ella.
WEDNESDAY
James showed the children the inside of a plug and explained how electricity works. He talked about the three different wires and the fuse. He also explained how dangerous electricity can be if it is not used correctly.
The children had a real treat in this lesson as Mrs Brinkley had bought lots of different fruits and vegetables for them to make their own smoothie's. They enjoyed using the blender but drinking them was the best bit.

THURSDAY

We had two different experiments in class.
What makes the best insulator?
We took 4 plastic bottles and covered them in four different materials using newspaper, foil, plastic bag and a sock. Then we filled them with boiling water and recorded the temperatures after 5,10,15,20 and 40 minutes. The whole class made their predictions after 5 minutes. The best insulator turned out to be the newspaper chosen by Ben and Miss Sorrell, the worst insulator was the sock.(Mrs Stead said "Next time my feet are cold, i'll use newspaper instead of socks".
What reacts best to Coke Cola?
The coke was poured in to 7 different glasses. One at a time we added sugar (slight fizz), salt (big fizz), milk (looked like chocolate milkshake), bicarbonate of soda (fizzed a little), peppermint (big fizz) but the most interesting was the baking powder as it fizzed up slowly, popped and started the process all over again. In the 7th glass we have left a dirty 2p coin, which will be left over the half term. What will happen to the coin?
