Our topic this week was chosen by Ben

SPACE

Monday

First of all we introduced the Solar system by looking at some video clips from the BBC website. We read the facts about each planet to the children. We looked at lots of different space books and Ben's lovely poster of the system. Then they had to draw two planets a write one fact about each planet.

Tuesday

The children wanted to make a Solar system of their own, so each child decided which planet they would like to paint. Each child was given a template of their planet, they had to look through books to find out what colour it would need to be painted. They all did a fantastic job of designing the Solar system.

Wednesday

They were all astronauts today, rocketing up in to space. They all had a log book of a space adventure and they had to record information in them. What they saw, what it was like, did they see any other planets etc. This was great for them because they had to use their imaginations.

Thursday

5,4,3,2,1 blast off......  We made some brilliant rockets, they cut, stuck, painted, coloured, using card and cardboard tubes. We also did a science experiment using a film canister wrapped in card like a rocket shape, an alka seltzer and a little water. Place the tablet in the canister add a little water put the lid back on and watch it blast off. The children really enjoyed themselves, as did the teachers.

Our Solar System is displayed on the wall in the Kangaroo class.
