I’m sorry it’s taken me a while to write, all has been very hectic here at WomenCraft. We have had three new interns arrive (all Americans) and I have had the task of showing them around, making sure they’re settling in and answering their hundreds of questions! It’s been very exhausting, but good fun too. Here are some of the animals we saw whilst there – Look at this enormous cricket!
We were sitting in a restaurant waiting for food, when he flew directly onto our table. It always amazes me the size of insect here. Even in Ngara, we have huge things flying and crawling around all the time. Yesterday morning we had both a Pray Mantis and a Dung Beetle in our office. Luckily I haven’t had to deal with any huge spiders (they’re a normal size, though unusually flat – they remind me a bit of the jelly spiders you can get in pic n’mix), though the other day I had to be very brave and catch an enormous black bug with a giant spike coming out behind it. It was living in our bathroom! One animal that I enjoy having here is Geckos. This is a very colourful one from Zanzibar, but they come in all different colours, green, black, white, blue and more. You have to be careful because when it gets very hot, if they are on a corrugated iron ceiling their sticky feet don’t work and they fall on your head. It’s funny to watch, but horrible if it’s your head. I like them because they eat the gnats and mosquitoes (which are driving me crazy buzzing and biting).
